What are handrail brackets made from, what styles are available and how to install them?
Wall mounted handrail brackets are designed to attach either standard ungrooved handrails or mopstick handrails to a wall. Handrail brackets are available in multiple styles and materials so you can achieve the look you want for your staircase.
And if we’re looking for something extremely affordable and which will blend in seamlessly with a white hallway, choose the white coated wall brackets for a simple and stylish overall look. White (or black) coated handrails come pre-coated, which means we can avoid the hassle of painting them and be confident the brackets have a durable finish.
Handrail wall brackets like this give us the opportunity to add interesting detail to this often overlooked area of the staircase and perfectly express our style.
What’s the spacing of brackets will be needed for a staircase handrail?
Even though there are no official guidelines for how far apart handrail brackets need to be, when we’re installing a handrail it’s a good idea to fit the brackets no more than 1 meter apart. Fitting enough brackets will ensure your handrail is safe and secure. For a standard 3.6m handrail you’ll need 4 brackets.
Starting from the bottom of the stairs:-
a) Fit 1st bracket 30cm from the bottom end of the handrail (this should roughly align with the edge of second stair tread up from the bottom of the stairs)
b) Fit the 2nd bracket 100cm along from the first one
c) Fit the 3rd bracket 100cm along from the second one
d) Fit the 4th bracket 100cm along from the third one (this should roughly align with the edge of the second riser down from the top of the stairs)
This should mean that the 4th handrail bracket is roughly 30cm from the top of the handrail (Please see below layout for easy reference).
Where shall we secure the brackets on a handrail?
We can fasten most handrail brackets onto the underside of the handrail because where is usually a flat surface. Once we’ve measured where the brackets should go on the handrail (see above), we can then screw the brackets in place. Most handrail brackets come with screws provided.

What’s the height should stair handrail brackets be?
Normally we should fit a handrail between 900mm and 1000mm above the pitch line of the stairs. We’ll need to bear this in mind when fitting our handrail brackets and ensure we install them at a height where the overall height measurement of the handrail falls between 900mm and 1000mm above the stairs. And handrail brackets should come along with all the components you need to fit them to the wall and your handrail.
